Arijit Singh

Arijit Singh is one of the most versatile and popular Indian musicians. He has performed in various Indian languages, Hindi and Bengali being the major ones. Owning a distinct voice that can match up to the expectations of the audience for any genre of music, his career graph has been steadily rising for about 8 years now. This clearly implies that he’ll be quite remembered in the future as well. He sang, composed, produced and recorded plenty, over the stretch of his career. By just 31 years of age, he sang over 150 songs, most of which were all-time hits.

Born in Murshidabad, West Bengal, on April 25, 1987, Arijit Singh had an ordinary upbringing. His father is a Punjabi and mother a Bengali and hence he grew up in an environment of cultural confluence. Since childhood, music was in his blood from the maternal side. Although he was quite good as a student, his heart used to beat for music. He started his musical training at the age of three. Rajendra Prasad Hazari and Dhirendra Prasad Hazari taught him classical music and tabla respectively. He was also taught Rabindra Sangeet and pop music by Birendra Prasad Hazari. He received government scholarship for training in Indian Classical Music vocals and then after there was no looking back.

Arijit started off his journey in the year 2005 when he went auditioning for a music reality show, Fame Gurukul. Although he made it to the finale, audience polling didn’t favour him and he acquired the sixth position. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, recognised the young talent during the show and approached him for a song in his then upcoming film Saawariya, called Yun shabnami. After the show was over he was immediately signed for an album that was never released, but this didn’t set him back as he won a reality show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil. With the prize money received, he opened a recording studio at Lokhandwala, Mumbai and started freelancing. In no time he became a music producer and started working for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar, Mithoon, Monty Sharma, and Pritam. He also started earning fame in the Telugu music industry.

The song Duaa from Shanghai and Phir le aya dil from Barfi, had fetched him the Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Male Playback Singer followed by his major breakthrough, Tum hi ho from Aashiqui 2 that fetched him Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Ever since, he has been singing back to back almost in all films including Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani, Chennai Express, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, Ek Villain and the list goes on.

Arijit Singh till date has received 53 awards and 139 nominations. Tum hi ho was the most awarding, as he won 9 out of 10 nominations. Here is the list:

Arijit Singh got himself entangled in a controversy with Salman Khan; if he sang for ‘Tubelight’ or not was the confusion. Salman had rejected Arijit’s version of ‘Ishtehaar’, from the movie ‘Welcome to New York’. This resulted in a tiff between the two. Producer Vashu Bhagnani on the other hand denied Arijit having sung the song for him anytime. As published by India Today, Vashu Bhagnani said, ”Shamir (Tandon), the composer of the song and I were interested in a certain texture of voice and Rahat suited it perfectly. So we asked him. If Arijit didn't sing, how can anyone remove his voice?"

Arijit explained in an interview with Hindustan times that Salman’s dislike for him dated way back to an award ceremony where he had worn a chappal casually to the show and had accidentally dozed off to sleep and had to be waken up by someone. When handing over the award, Salman asked if he, the one who dozed off, was to receive the award. Arijit jokingly replied that it was them who had put him to sleep. Although Arijit realised later that he had made a mistake, but Salman had already taken offence. Salman didn’t want any Arijit song for the movie Kick. Arijit says that he knows he himself was at fault and hopes that the senior actor would forgive him someday.
